The number of men and women who train for the NFL combine is growing.
But not all of them have the required equipment to lift a heavy object.
Some coaches, trainers and weightlifting experts say they don’t even need to train at all.
“The biggest misconception out there is that we are not lifting heavy weights,” said Steve Breen, the former heavyweight champion and current coach at the University of New Hampshire.
“There is not a lot of training that goes into the lifting of heavy weights.”
Breen and his wife, Julie, were featured on “The Dan Patrick Show” in 2016 as the first people in New Hampshire to train with weights.
Julie Breen worked out at a local gym, but Steve Brenn says they weren’t the only ones.
“When you have guys that aren’t training that hard that they are going to have to work on it and have to train in a different sport, you don’t necessarily need to be able to lift heavier,” he said.
“I have no problem with people who train at home but that is just not what it takes.”
What does it take to train for an NFL combine?
Weightlifting equipment can cost between $100,000 to $200,000.
A typical combine will cost between about $40,000 and $60,000, according to the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
That figure includes equipment, a coach, and an equipment trainer.
Some weights are too heavy for some coaches to use, so they use different types of equipment, such as the bench press and snatch.
Breen, who trains at a gym in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, has a 3-foot wide bench that weighs between 500 and 600 pounds.
Julie says she works out with weights that range from a little under 200 pounds to 500 to 700 pounds.
Breen said it’s not unusual for him to lift weights that weigh from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds.
“It’s not something that I have ever had a problem with, but it’s just something I have to think about,” he added.
Brenn, who is also a certified strength and conditioning coach, said the only equipment that matters is the equipment.
“If you can lift a little more weight and still have the ability to hold it, you are going in,” he explained.
“Most people don’t need the whole thing, but they do need to have the whole system.”
While most combine teams have a heavy barbell, the weight is rarely used, so the coaches don’t have to use it.
Instead, they have to choose from a variety of different weights.
“For some of the bigger guys, I don’t think they need the full weight,” Breen explained.
“They don’t want to be that guy that can lift 500 pounds, so you just use a little bit of a lighter one.”
But for me, if I had to use the full barbell I would probably use a half or a quarter of a full bar,” he continued.”
And I wouldn’t necessarily use that heavy bar.
“Julie Breen works out for a group of coaches and weightlifters at her gym in Manchester, New England.
She said that while she never trains with the full strength of a team of weightlifchers, she does use weights that are about 200 to 250 pounds.
Julie said she believes most people who work out at the combine are not necessarily strong enough to lift anything bigger than 300 pounds.”
We do not use the whole weight,” she said.

Bree said he also doesn’t have a problem using a bench press.
He works out at his local gym in a weight room, but he doesn’t use weights as heavy as a coach would.
“There is a ton of stuff out there that is too hard to do and you have to have a lot more than a few pounds on a bar,” Bree said.
“The bench is a little harder.
I don`t think that many people need the entire bench.”
But the number of people who get to use a weightlifting machine or a weight is not the only important thing that determines the strength of an athlete.
“Strength is about having a lot,” said Breen.
“A lot of times, when you train, you want to have that strength.”
Some guys are really strong and they want to work out that hard and then they are not going to get to a point where they are able to train that hard.
You need that strength and then you need to get it back.
“Brenner says he has had people train with him, and said he does not think they were strong enough.”
It’s not really about what they have.””
It’s all about how strong they are.
It’s not really about what they have.”
