MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Minnesota gets full season football at the new Vikings stadium, but the first two weeks of the season will feature two exhibition games at the newly-opened Minnesota Sports Complex.
The Vikings’ first preseason game will be at the complex Saturday against the Cleveland Browns.
Minnesota has already played a preseason game at the stadium, which opened last month.
The team’s last game was a preseason contest against the New Orleans Saints in May, and it opened the year with the St. Louis Rams, Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It will open the season with the Cleveland Lions, New York Jets and Chicago Bears, and its first regular-season game is Aug. 15 against the Detroit Lions.
The stadium is expected to be ready for a regular season opener on Sept. 7 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Minnesota won’t play preseason games at Soldier Field because of safety concerns.
The facility has had a year-round, three-day-a-week practice schedule, but it was not open for the first time this season.
The NFL is testing out different types of stadiums and will have teams play some preseason games there, too.
The new stadium, dubbed the Vikings Field at the end of a mile-long tunnel, was completed in January, and the Vikings said in a statement that the new stadium “provides Minnesota the best opportunity to play at a high level in the next two years.”
